Al-Qalam (The Pen): (47) Or do they possess the Unseen...?

Exegesis:

There are two interpretations regarding this verse:

1. Interpretation 1: That they possess the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawh al-Mahfūẓ). Therefore, they write down the recompense for their disbelief and polytheism, which is why they persist in it. This is an interrogative statement intended as a form of denial/reproach.

2. Interpretation 2: That the unseen matters are as if they are present in their minds, to the extent that they write concerning God—meaning they decree upon God whatever they wish and desire.
