Al-Haqqah (The Inevitable Event): (14) And the earth and the mountains were lifted...
Two Issues Concerning This Verse:
Issue 1: The Lifting and Crushing of the Earth and Mountains
The lifting of the earth and the mountains occurred in one of the following ways:
- By the Earthquake of the Resurrection: The violent shaking that precedes the Day of Judgment.
- By a Wind: A wind of such immense force that it lifts the earth and the mountains.
- By an Angel: An angel is commanded to lift them.
- By the Power of God (Allah): Without any apparent physical cause.
Then, the phrase "فدكتا" (so they were crushed/smashed) means:
- The two entities (the earth and the mountains) were smashed together—the mountains against the earth, and the earth against the mountains—until they were pulverized, becoming "a heap of fine, scattered sand" (kadhīb muhīl) and "scattered dust" (habā' munbith).
- The word Dakk (دك) implies a more intense crushing than Daqq (دق).
- Another interpretation is that they were flattened into a single, level expanse, so that "no crookedness or unevenness" (ʿawajan wa lā amatan) would be seen upon it. This is derived from the usage: "The hump of the camel was indakka (flattened/spread out)," as in the description of a baʿīr adakk (a camel with a flattened hump). This root is also the source of the word Dukkān (shop/bench).
Issue 2: Grammatical Analysis of "فدكتا"
Al-Farra' stated that the dual form Dukkatā (فدكتا) must be in the accusative case (mansūb) because the pronoun suffix attached to it (tā for dual feminine) refers back to two distinct entities (earth and mountains).
He further explains why the dual feminine form was used instead of the plural feminine form (fudukna):
- The mountains were treated as a single unit, just as the earth was treated as a single unit.
- This is analogous to the verse: "{Indeed, the heavens and the earth were a joined entity}" (Al-Anbiyā': 30), where the dual form (kānatā) was used, not the plural.
