| Al-Haqqah: (18) That Day, you will be presented...

His saying, the Exalted: **{That Day, you will be presented}** (Yawma'idhin tu'radūn). "Al-'Ard" (presentation/exhibition) is an expression for reckoning and questioning. It is likened to the Sultan presenting his army to ascertain their condition. Similar to this is His saying: **{And they will be presented to your Lord in rows}** (59:7). It is narrated that there are three presentations on the Day of Resurrection. Two presentations involve excuses, arguments, and reprimands. As for the third, the books will be scattered, and the fortunate one will take his book in his right hand, and the doomed one will take his book in his left hand.

Then He said: {Not a single secret of yours will be hidden} (Lā takhfā minkum khāfiyah). Regarding this, there are two issues:

Issue 1: Interpretation

There are two interpretations of the verse:

  1. Confirmation of the Presentation: It means: You will be presented, and your affair will not be hidden, for He (Allah) knows everything, and nothing hidden from you is hidden from Him. Similar to this is His saying: {Nothing hidden from Allah, of them, is hidden} (3:5). In this case, the purpose is to emphasize the threat, meaning: You will be presented to the One from Whom absolutely nothing is hidden.
  2. Revelation of the Hidden: It means that on the Day of Resurrection, what was hidden from you in the world will be revealed. The conditions of the believers will become manifest, thereby perfecting their joy, and the conditions of the people of punishment will be revealed, thereby manifesting their sorrow and disgrace. This is what is meant by His saying: {The Day when the secrets will be tested, and there will be no strength for him, nor any helper} (86:9-10). In this lies the greatest admonition and warning: the fear of exposure/disgrace.

Issue 2: Recitation (Qirā'āt)

The recitation of the majority (Qurrā') is {Lā takhfā} (with a tā' dotted from above), indicating the feminine subject (khāfiyah).

Abu 'Ubaydah preferred the yā' (Lā yakhfā), which is the recitation of Hamzah and Al-Kisā'ī. They argued that the yā' can be attributed to both the masculine and the feminine, whereas the tā' can only be attributed to the feminine. Here, attributing the verb to the masculine is permissible, as the intended hidden thing (al-khāfiyah) could be something possessing the quality of being hidden (i.e., a hidden entity). Furthermore, separation has occurred here between the noun and the verb by the phrase {minkum} (from you).

Know that when the Almighty mentioned what this presentation culminates in, He said:

! 7 < {Then as for him who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here! Read my record!} > 7 !
