Al-Haqqah: (24) Eat and drink with pleasure...

The meaning is that this will be said to them, and there are several issues concerning this:

Issue 1: Some scholars say that the command {Eat} is neither obligatory nor recommended, because the Hereafter is not a realm of obligation (Taklīf). Others suggest it could be recommended, as the purpose is to honor that person and bring joy to their heart.

Issue 2: The address is pluralized in {Eat} after the singular reference in {he who is given...} (referring to the individual believer), because the phrase {he who is given...} implies a collective meaning (i.e., all those who are given their record).

Issue 3: {What you put forth (Aslaftum)} means the righteous deeds you presented. The linguistic meaning of Islāf is presenting something in anticipation of a good return, similar to lending. Hence, it is said, "He aslaf in such-and-such" if he advanced his wealth in it. The meaning is: by the righteous deeds you performed, and {the bygone days} refers to the days of this world that have passed. This is supported by verses like, "Ages have passed before me," and "That is a nation that has passed away." Al-Kalbī said that {What you put forth} refers to fasting, because commanding them to eat and drink indicates that this reward is for those who abstained in the world by fasting in obedience to God Almighty.

Issue 4: The phrase {What you put forth} indicates that they deserved this reward because of their actions. This proves that deeds are the cause (mūjib) of the reward. Furthermore, if obedience were solely an act of God, then God would be giving a person a reward not based on an action performed by that person, which is impossible, and the answer to this is well-known.
