Al-Haqqah (The Inevitable Reality): Verse 25

And as for him who is given [his record]...

Know that the Almighty has clarified that when this person looks at his record (book of deeds) and recalls the ugliness of his actions, he becomes ashamed of them. This shame results in a torment greater than the torment of the Fire.

Therefore, he exclaims: "I wish I had been punished by the Fire!"

This implies: "If only they had presented me with this record that reminds me of the ugliness of my deeds, so that I would not fall into this state of shame."

This alerts you to the fact that spiritual torment is more severe than physical torment.

His statement, "and I did not know what the reckoning was," means: "I did not know what my accounting would be, because the reckoning has already occurred, and there is no benefit in that accounting now, as the entire burden rests upon him."

{ O, I wish that [death] had been the decisive end! }
