Al-Haqqah (The Inevitable Event): (37) None shall eat it except...

The Sinners (Al-Āthimūn): They are the people of sins and faults. A man commits a fault (khaṭi’a) when he intentionally commits a sin. They are the polytheists (Mushrikūn).

(Note on Readings: It has been recited as "Al-Khāṭi’ūn" by substituting the hamza with a yā’, and as "Al-Khāṭūn" by dropping it. Ibn Abbas reportedly objected to this latter reading, saying, "What are 'Al-Khāṭūn'? We all make mistakes (nakhṭū); it should only be 'Al-Khāṭi’ūn' [the sinners]. Similarly, it should be 'Al-Ṣābi’ūn' [the apostates], not 'Al-Ṣābūn'." A possible response to this objection is that "Al-Khāṭūn" might refer to those who transgress the truth and cross the limits set by God.)

Contextual Transition: After establishing the possibility of the Resurrection, then affirming its occurrence, and subsequently mentioning the states of the fortunate and the wretched, God concludes the discourse by glorifying the Qur'an, saying:

{ 7 < { So I swear by what you see * And what you do not see } > 7 !}
