Surah Al-Haqqah 69:38

ﱌ ﱍ ﱎ ﱏ

So I swear by what you see

Tafsir

Mafatih al-Ghayb

Verse range: 69:38

Open in Qurani

Al-Haqqah: (38) So I swear not by what you see...

Issue 1:

Some commentators have said that the word "لا" (No) here means "I swear," and the particle la is either superfluous (a ṣilah) or it is a rhetorical return to a previous statement.

Others maintain that "لا" (No) here is a negation of the oath, as if saying, "I do not swear," implying that this Qur'an, being the "saying of a noble messenger" (Al-Haqqah: 40), is so clear and evident that it does not require an oath. A detailed discussion of this matter will be presented at the beginning of Surah Lā Uqsimu biYawm al-Qiyāmah (The Resurrection: 1).

Issue 2:

Regarding His statement: {By what you see And what you do not see} (Al-Haqqah: 38), this encompasses all things universally. This is because everything falls into one of two categories: that which is seen, or that which is unseen. Thus, this oath includes the Creator and the creation, this world and the Hereafter, bodies and spirits, humankind and jinn, and both manifest and hidden blessings.

Then, the Almighty states:

**{Indeed, it is the saying of a noble messenger.}** (Al-Haqqah: 40)
