Al-Haqqah (The Inevitable Reality): Verse 50

{وَإِنَّهُ لَحَسْرَةٌ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ} (And indeed, it [the matter] is a regret/sorrow for the disbelievers.)

Regarding the pronoun in the phrase: {وَإِنَّهُ} (And indeed, it [is]).

There are two interpretations concerning what this pronoun refers back to:

  1. The Qur'an: The pronoun refers back to the Qur'an. It is as if the meaning is: "And indeed, the Qur'an is a source of regret for the disbelievers."
    • This regret will manifest either on the Day of Resurrection, when they witness the reward of those who believed in it, or in this worldly life (Dunya) when they see the ascendancy and dominion of the believers.
  1. Their Denial (Takdhib): Al-Muqatil said that their denial of the Qur'an is the source of regret for them. This is supported by the preceding verse: {وَإِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِينَ} (And indeed, We know that among you are deniers) (Al-Haqqah: 49).

Then, the Almighty said:

{وَإِنَّهُ لَحَقُّ الْيَقِينِ} (And indeed, it [the Qur'an] is the truth of certainty.)
