Surah Al-Haqqah: (8) Do you see any remnant of them?

There are two issues concerning this verse:

Issue 1: Regarding the word *Bāqiyah* (remnant/survivor)

There are three interpretations:

  1. It refers to the remnant itself (the surviving entity).
  2. It refers to the meaning of survival/remaining.
  3. It refers to the state of permanence/survival, similar to how Ṭāghiyah (tyranny) means Ṭughyān (transgression).

Issue 2: The meaning of "Do you see any remnant of them?"

A group held that this means no one remained from the offspring of those people. They used this verse as evidence for the statement of Ibn Jurayj:

They (the people of 'Ad) remained alive for seven nights and eight days under God's punishment of wind. When it was evening on the eighth day, they died. The wind carried their bodies and cast them into the sea. This is what is meant by His saying: "Do you see any remnant of them?" and His saying: "So that nothing was seen except their dwellings" (Al-Ahqaf: 25).
