Al-A'raf (The Heights): Verse 82

Original Text Segment:

Translation:

The meaning intended here is: "Expel Lot and his followers." This is supported by the fact that in another Surah, the Almighty stated:

"But the only response of his people was to say, 'Expel them from your city!'" (An-Naml: 56).

Furthermore, it is apparent that they sought the expulsion of those who forbade them from the act they desired and intended, and that prohibitor could only be Lot and his people.

Regarding His statement, {...those who purify themselves} (yataṭahharūn), there are several interpretations:

  1. First: That the act they were committing was a transgression involving impurity (najāsah). Therefore, whoever abstains from it has purified himself.
  2. Second: That distancing oneself from sin is termed purification (ṭahārah). Thus, His statement {...those who purify themselves} means they distance themselves from sins and transgressions.
  3. Third: That they said, {...people who purify themselves} as a form of mockery towards Lot and his people for their purification from lewd acts. This is analogous to how the wicked might say to some righteous individuals when they offer admonition: "Get away from us, you ascetic, and relieve us of this self-denying one."
