Al-Ma'arij: (27) And those who are from...

The apprehension (al-ishfāq) stems from two things: either the fear of neglecting obligations, or the fear of committing prohibited acts. This is like His saying:

"And those who give what they give while their hearts are fearful" (Al-Mu'minun: 60).

And like His saying, the Exalted:

"Those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful" (Al-Hajj: 35).

Whoever maintains this fear and apprehension regarding what they are commanded to do will be cautious against falling short and eager to fulfill what they are tasked with, both in knowledge and action.

Then, the Exalted One emphasized this fear by saying:

**{Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not to be taken lightly [or, is not safe from]}** (Al-Ma'arij: 27).
