ﲼ ﲽ ﲾ ﲿ
And those who are in their testimonies upright
ﲼ ﲽ ﲾ ﲿ
And those who are in their testimonies upright
Tafsir
Verse range: 70:33
It has been read as بِشَهَادَتِهِمْ (singular testimony) and بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ (plural testimonies).
Al-Wahidi stated that the singular form (بِشَهَادَتِهِمْ) is preferable because a verbal noun (masdar) is generally singular even when followed by a plural object, similar to the phrase: "the braying of donkeys" (لِصَوْتِ الْحَمِيرِ).
However, those who used the plural form intended to emphasize the variety and multiplicity of testimonies, as they are numerous and diverse, making the plural appropriate in terms of variation.
The majority of commentators say this refers to testimonies given before judges, where they uphold the truth and do not conceal them. These testimonies are included among trusts (Amanat), but God singled them out to highlight their immense virtue. This is because upholding testimony preserves rights, while neglecting it leads to their nullification and loss.
'Ata narrated from Ibn Abbas that it refers to the testimony that God is One and has no partner.
