Surah Al-Ma'arij (The Ascending Stairways): Verse 37
...to the right and to the left.
This is because they were gathered to his right and to his left.
The meaning of {عِزِينَ} (in groups/in parties):
- It means groups, and its singular form is ʿizzah. It refers to a band of people.
- Al-Azhari said: Its origin comes from the saying: ʿazzā fulānun nafsahu ilā Banī fulān (So-and-so attributed himself to the tribe of So-and-so), meaning he traced his lineage back to them (ʿazwan). The noun is ʿazwah.
- The ʿizzah was every group that attributed itself to one matter.
- Know that this word is a manqūṣ (a noun ending in a weak letter) whose pluralization with wāw and nūn (as ʿizīn) is permissible, serving as a replacement for the omitted letter. Its original form was ʿazwah. The discussion regarding this word is similar to the discussion concerning {عِضِينَ} (in factions) in Surah Al-Hijr (15:91), which has already been covered.
- It is also said that the mockers were five groups (arhaṭ).
