Surah Nuh (71): Verse 11

Translation and Exegesis (Based on Mafatih al-Ghayb):

Know that creation is inherently inclined towards loving immediate, transient benefits. This is why the Almighty stated:

{And [He promises] another [favor] which you love: aid from Allah and a near victory.} (61:13)

Therefore, it is necessary that Allah, the Exalted, informs them here that their faith in Him will gather for them, alongside an abundant share in the Hereafter, fertility and wealth in this world.

The worldly benefits He promised them in this verse are five:

  1. {He will send upon you rain in abundance} (يرسل السماء عليكم مدرارا). There are several interpretations regarding "Heaven" (السماء) here:
    • One meaning is that rain descends from the heavens (the sky).
    • Another is that "Heaven" here refers to the clouds.
    • A third is that "Heaven" refers to the rain itself, based on the poetry:

When rain descends upon the land of a people, We tend to it, even if they are angry.

    • Madrār (مدرارا) means abundant in pouring forth. The form Mif'āl is used for both masculine and feminine, like mi'ṭār (very fragrant) for a man or woman.
  1. {And will extend to you with wealth} (ويمددكم بأموال). This is not restricted to one type of wealth but encompasses all of it.
  1. {and sons} (وبنين). There is no doubt that this is something the natural disposition inclines towards.
  1. {and will make for you gardens} (ويجعل لكم جنات), meaning orchards.
  1. {and will make for you rivers} (ويجعل لكم أنهارا).

Then He said:

**{What is the matter with you that you do not expect from Allah any dignity/reverence?}** (71:13)
