Surah Nuh (Noah): Verse 27

Original Text Segment:

إنك إن تذرهم يضلوا عبادك ولا يلدوا إلا فاجرا كفارا

Translation:

If You leave them, they will lead Your servants astray, and they will not beget except wicked disbelievers.

Exegesis (Tafsir) based on Fakhr al-Din al-Razi's approach:

Query: How did Noah (peace be upon him) know this certainty (that they would only beget wicked disbelievers)?

Answer: This knowledge comes from two sources:

  1. Explicit Text (Nass): The statement of the Almighty: "And it was revealed to Noah that none of your people will believe except those who have already believed." (This confirms the divine decree regarding their future).
  2. Empirical Observation (Istiqra'): He remained among them for a thousand years minus fifty years. Through this long period, he became intimately familiar with their nature and tested them thoroughly.

Example of their influence: A man would go to his son and say: "Beware of this man (Noah), for he is a liar. My father commanded me with a similar command [to reject him]." When the elder generation died, the younger generation grew up adhering to the same instruction.

Regarding the phrase: {ولا يلدوا إلا فاجراً كفاراً} (and they will not beget except wicked disbelievers):

There are two interpretations for this statement:

  1. In Your Knowledge (God's Knowledge): That they will be known to be so in God's eternal decree.
  2. Future Outcome: That they will inevitably become so in reality.

Next Verse (Verse 28):

رب اغفر لي ولوالدي ولمن دخل بيتي مؤمنا وللمؤمنين والمؤمنات ولا تزد الظالمين إلا تبارا

Translation:

My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer, and [forgive] the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction.
