Surah Al-Jinn 72:20
ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ
Say, [O Muhammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."

| وقرأ عاصم وحمزة ، { قل } حتى يكون نظيرا لما بعده ، وهو قوله : { قل إنى لا أملك } ( الجن : 21 ) { قل إنى لن يجيرنى } ( الجن : 22 ) | 'Aṣim and Ḥamzah read it as "Say" (قُلْ - second person imperative), so that it corresponds to what follows it: "Say, 'I possess not for you harm or benefit'" (72:21) and "Say, 'Indeed, none will ever protect me'" (72:22). |
| قال مقاتل : إن كفار مكة قالوا للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم : ( إنك جئت بأمر عظيم وقد عاديت الناس كلهم ، فارجع عن هذا ) فأنزل الله : { قل إنما * ادعوا * ربى } | Muqātil said: The disbelievers of Makkah said to the Prophet (PBUH): "You have brought a tremendous matter, and you have antagonized all the people. So, turn back from this." Then Allah revealed: "Say, 'I only invoke my Lord...'" |

| ومن قرأ { قال } حمل ذلك على أن القوم لما قالوا ذلك ، أجابهم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بقوله : { إنما أدعو ربى } فحكى الله ذلك عنه بقوله { قال } | As for those who read "He said" (Qāla), this is interpreted to mean that when the people said that, the Prophet (PBUH) answered them with his statement: "I only invoke my Lord." Allah then narrated this response from him by saying "He said" (Qāla). |
| أو يكون ذاك من بقية حكاية الجن أحوال الرسول لقومهم . | Alternatively, this might be part of the continuation of the Jinn narrating the Messenger's condition to their people. |
