Surah Al-Jinn (72): Verse 22
The Exegesis of Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (Mafatih al-Ghayb)
Verse 22: {Say, "Indeed, I will never be protected from Allah by anyone,}
- Context: Muqatil reports that the Jinn said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Leave what you are calling us to, and we will protect you."
- Divine Response: In response to this offer, Allah commanded him to say: {Say, "Indeed, I will never be protected from Allah by anyone."}
{...nor will I find besides Him any refuge.}
- Meaning of Multahad (ملتحدا): It means a refuge (malja') or a stronghold (hirz).
- Linguistic Note (Al-Mubarrad): Multahad is similar to saying mun'araj (a turning point or deviation). The root word al-had (الحد) linguistically means inclination or deviation. Therefore, al-multahad refers to an entrance into the earth, like a subterranean passage (sarb).
Verse 23: {Except [by] conveying [the message] from Allah and His messages. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell, wherein they will abide forever.}
- Exception: The only protection or refuge the Prophet (PBUH) has is {Except [by] conveying [the message] from Allah and His messages}—meaning his duty is only to deliver the revelation.
- Consequence of Disobedience: {And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell, wherein they will abide forever.} This serves as a warning that disobedience leads to eternal punishment.
