Al-Jinn (72): (4) And that he [the Jinn] used to say...

The term Safah (folly/silliness) means lightness of intellect. Shatat (exceeding bounds/error) means transgressing the limit in injustice and other matters. From this is ashata fi al-sūm (he went too far in bargaining/demanding) when he exaggerated in it. That is, he uttered a statement that is inherently shatath (erroneous) due to the extreme extent to which he went.

Know that since Shatat is the transgression of the limit, and the wording itself does not indicate whether the intended transgression is in the aspect of negation or the aspect of affirmation, it becomes clear that both extremes are blameworthy. Transgressing the limit in negation leads to Ta'tīl (denial/negation of attributes), while transgressing the limit in affirmation leads to Tashbīh (anthropomorphism/likening God to creation), and the affirmation of a partner, a consort, or a child. Both of these matters are shatath (error) and blameworthy.

The Fourth Type: His saying, the Exalted:

**{And that we had thought that men and jinn would never utter against Allah a lie.}** (72:4)
