Surah Al-Jinn (72): Verse 5

And we had thought that...

Two Issues Arise Here:

The First Issue: The Meaning of the Verse

We only adopted the sayings of others because we thought that they would not attribute falsehoods to God. However, when we heard the Qur'an, we realized that they do lie. This implies an admission on their part that they fell into those ignorances [of disbelief] solely due to imitation (Taqlid), and that they were only saved from those darknesses through the blessing of reasoning and argumentation (Istidlal and Ihtijaj).

The Second Issue: The Grammatical Case of {كذباً} (a lie)

Why is it in the accusative case (mansub)? There are several interpretations:

  1. It is an adjective describing an omitted verbal noun (Masdar). The implied meaning is: "That mankind and jinn will not utter a false statement against God."
  2. It is in the accusative case as a direct object (Masdar) because lying is a type of speech (Qawl).
  3. For those who recite it as: {أَن لَّن تَقُولُوا} (that you will not say), they place {كذباً} in the position of a verbal noun (Taqawwulan), not as an adjective, because the act of falsely attributing speech (Taqawwul) can only be a lie.

The Fifth Type:

**{ وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ الْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا }** (And that there were men among mankind who sought refuge with men among the jinn, so they increased them in terror.)

{ وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ الْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ } (And that there were men among mankind who sought refuge with men among the jinn...)
