Al-Jinn (The Jinn): (8)

"And we have touched the heaven..."

  • Touching (اللمس - al-lams): Literally means to physically touch. It is used metaphorically here for seeking or inquiring, because the one who touches is seeking to know or recognize something. It is similar to saying talabahu (he sought it). Likewise, al-jass (to probe/feel) is used, as in, "They probed it with their eyes and spied upon it (tajassasūhu)."
  • Meaning: The meaning is that we sought to reach the heaven and listen to the speech of its inhabitants.
  • Guards (الحرس - al-ḥaras): This is a singular noun used collectively, like al-khadam (servants) used for al-khaddām (the servants). Therefore, it is described with the singular adjective shadīd (severe/intense). If the adjective were meant to agree with the plural meaning (guards), it would have been shidād (plural).

The Eighth Type (of Divine Protection):

"And we used to sit therein in places for hearing. But whoever listens now, he will find a vigilant flame (a shooting star) lying in wait for him." (72:9)
