Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:10

ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ ﲃ

And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance.

Al-Muzzammil (73): Verse 10

وَاصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ

Meaning: Since you have taken Me as your Trustee (Wakīl), then be patient concerning what they say, and entrust their affairs to Me.

  • Since I am your Trustee, I will manage your affairs better than you manage your own.
  • Know that the essential duties of a servant are confined to two matters: how they deal with God, and how they deal with creation. The former is more important than the latter.
  • Since God mentioned the first category (dealing with God) at the beginning of this Surah, He followed it up with the second category (dealing with creation).
  • God has encompassed everything necessary in this regard within these two words (patience and leaving them to God).
  • A person either mixes with people or withdraws from them.
    • If he mixes with them, he must necessarily practice patience (ṣabir) concerning their harm and harshness. If he hopes for good and ease from them, he will not find it and will fall into sorrow and grief. Thus, it is established that whoever intends to mix with people must have much patience.
    • If he abandons mixing with them, that is the beautiful abandonment (al-hijr al-jamīl).
  • Therefore, every person must adopt one of these two courses of action.
  • The beautiful abandonment means withdrawing from them in heart and desire, opposing them in actions while maintaining gentle conduct, overlooking their faults, and refraining from retaliation. This is similar to His saying:
    • "So turn away from them and admonish them" (An-Nisā: 63).
    • "And turn away from the ignorant" (Al-A'rāf: 199).
    • "So turn away from him who turned away from Our message" (An-Najm: 29).
  • The commentators said: This verse was revealed before the command to fight, and was then abrogated by the command to fight. Others said: Rather, this is taking permission from God regarding what is more conducive to acceptance, so abrogation is not necessary in such a case, and this view is sounder.

# ! 7 < { وَذَرْنِي وَالْمُكَذِّبِينَ أُولِي النَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلًا } . > 7 !

And leave Me with the deniers—those of ease and luxury—and give them a little respite.
