Verse range: 73:7
**{ إِنَّ لَكَ فِي النَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِيلًا }** *Indeed, for you by day is a long engagement [in worldly affairs].*
Al-Mubarrid said that { سَبْحًا } (sabḥan) means engaging in various activities or moving about in what is obligatory. This is why a swimmer (sābiḥ) is named as such, because he moves about using his hands and feet.
There are two interpretations regarding the meaning of this phrase in context:
The word { سَبْحًا } (sabḥan) has been recited with a Kha' (خ) dotted from above (i.e., { سَبْخًا } - sabkhan). This is a metaphor derived from the fluffing or teasing out of wool (sabkh al-ṣūf), which involves spreading out its fibers.
The meaning here is that during the day, the heart becomes preoccupied due to worldly concerns, and its intentions become scattered due to various demands.
Know that the Almighty first commanded His Messenger to observe the night vigil (Qiyām al-Layl), then mentioned the reason why the night was singled out over the day, and finally clarified what the most noble actions commanded during the night vigil are.
**{ 7 }** **{ وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا }** *And remember the Name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with complete devotion.*
