Al-Muddaththir (74): Verse 12

"And I gave him abundant wealth,"

Regarding the interpretation of al-māl al-mumdūd (abundant/extended wealth), there are several views:

  1. Wealth with Continuous Supply: It refers to wealth that has a continuous supply coming in, portion after portion, perpetually. This is why 'Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb interpreted it as a monthly yield (ghallah shahr bi-shahr).
  2. Wealth That Increases: It is wealth that is extended through increase, such as milk from udders, crops from fields, and various forms of trade.
  3. Wealth with Extended Domain/Scope: Ibn 'Abbās said his wealth was extended across the distance between Mecca and Ṭā’if, consisting of camels, horses, sheep, numerous gardens in Ṭā’if, trees, rivers, and abundant ready cash. Muqātil said he possessed an orchard whose benefit never ceased, neither in winter nor in summer. Thus, al-mumdūd here is like the phrase in the verse: "{and a shade extended}" (Al-Wāqi'ah: 30), meaning unending.
  4. Vast Quantity: It means abundant wealth. This is because when wealth is plentiful, its enumeration (counting) extends far.

Some exegetes attempted to quantify this abundant wealth: some said it was one thousand dinars, others said four thousand, and still others said one million. However, these specific estimations are not favored by sound reasoning.
