Tafsir of Al-Muddathir 74:2

Al-Muddaththir: (2) Rise and warn.

Regarding the phrase {Rise} (Qum), there are two interpretations:

1. Rise from your resting place.
2. Rise with resolve and determination.

Regarding the phrase {and warn} (fa-andhir), there are two interpretations:

1. Warn your people of God's punishment if they do not believe. Ibn Abbas said: "Rise as a warner to mankind."
   • Those who hold the first interpretation cite the verse {and warn} (wa-andhir).
   • Those who hold the second interpretation cite the verse {And We have not sent you except to all mankind} (Saba: 28).

There is a third opinion: that the meaning is "Then occupy yourself with the act of warning." It is as if God is saying to him: "Prepare yourself for this profession." This is analogous to the difference between saying, "Learn the craft of debate," and saying, "Debate Zayd."
