Al-Muddaththir (74): Verse 28
لا تبقي ولا تذر
Translation and Exegesis:
There is a difference of opinion regarding the meaning of these two phrases:
- Some scholars say they are two synonymous words with the same meaning. The purpose of the repetition is for emphasis and exaggeration, similar to saying, "He turned away from me and averted himself from me."
- Others maintain that there must be a distinction between them, offering several interpretations:
- First View (Atta's narration from Ibn Abbas): It means the Fire leaves nothing of the flesh, blood, and bone remaining. When they are recreated, the Fire immediately returns to burn them with an intensity greater than before, and so on, perpetually.
- Second View: It means the Fire does not leave any of those deserving of punishment without punishing them, and then it does not leave any part of their bodies without burning it.
- Third View: It means the Fire leaves nothing of the bodies of the punished, and furthermore, those flames do not leave any of their power or intensity unused in tormenting them.
