Tafsir of Al-Muddathir 74:48

Al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One): Verse 48

فما تنفعهم شفاعة

So the intercession of intercessors will not benefit them.

Exegesis Note:

Our companions (the Ash'ari scholars) used the implication (mafhūm) of this verse as evidence for the establishment of intercession for sinners (fusāq). They argued:

• The specification that intercession will not benefit these particular individuals (the disbelievers mentioned previously) implies that intercession will benefit others.

Then the Almighty said:

! 7 < { فما لهم عن التذكرة معرضين } . > 7 !

What is the matter with them that they turn away from the Reminder (Admonition)?
