Tafsir
Verse range: 74:52
They said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "We will not believe in you until every one of us receives a book from the heaven, addressed from the Lord of the Worlds to so-and-so son of so-and-so, and in which we are commanded to follow you." This is similar to His saying: {We will never believe you until you cause a spring to gush forth from the earth for us} (Al-Isra: 93), and His saying: {Or until you cause the heaven to fall upon us in pieces, as you claim, or bring Allah and the angels before us in a visible array} (Al-Isra: 93). It is also narrated that they said: "If Muhammad is truthful, let a scroll appear at the head of every one of us, containing a declaration of acquittal from the Fire." Another interpretation is that they used to say: "It has reached us that for a man among the Children of Israel, his sin and its expiation would appear written upon his head, so bring us something like that." This (referring to the desired scrolls) is far removed from the "spread-out scrolls" (صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً). However, if by "spread-out scrolls" (صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً) is meant manifest, visible writings, then it is plausible. Sa'id ibn Jubayr recited it as {صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً} (with both words in the light form of the verb), implying that *nashr* (spreading out) and *nushur* (being spread out) are synonymous, similar to how *anzala* (He sent down) and *nazzala* (He sent down repeatedly) are related.
Then the Almighty said:
