Surah Al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One): Verse 7
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ
(And for your Lord, be patient.)
Exegesis (Tafsir)
There are several interpretations regarding this verse:
- Patience in Giving: If you are given wealth, then be patient in refraining from reminding others (of your favor) and from seeking abundance (in return). That is, abandon this action for the sake of your Lord's pleasure.
- Patience in Not Seeking Compensation: If you give something, do not seek compensation for it; let this restraint be for the sake of your Lord.
- Patience in Obedience: In the beginning of this Surah, We commanded you to do certain things and forbade you from others. Therefore, occupy yourself with these actions and abstentions for the sake of your Lord's command. It is as if the preceding verses contained injunctions for actions and abstentions, and this verse clarifies the reason why these actions and abstentions must be performed: seeking the pleasure of the Lord.
- Contrast with the Disbelievers: We mentioned that when the disbelievers gathered and discussed the state of Muhammad (PBUH), Al-Walid entered his house. The people then said, "Al-Walid has apostatized." Abu Jahl entered upon him and said, "The Quraysh have gathered wealth for you so that you do not abandon the religion of your forefathers." Al-Walid remained upon his disbelief for the sake of that wealth. Therefore, it is said to Muhammad (PBUH): He remained upon his false religion for the sake of wealth, but as for you, be patient upon your true religion for the sake of the Truth (Allah), and nothing else.
- Subtle Rebuke to the Polytheists: This verse is an allusion to the polytheists, as if it were said to the Prophet (PBUH):
- {وَرَبِّكَ فَكَبِّرْ} (And magnify your Lord) – Magnify Allah, not the idols.
- {وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ} (And keep your garments clean) – And do not be like the polytheists whose bodies and garments are impure.
- {وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ} (And shun the pollution) – And do not approach it as the disbelievers approach it.
- {وَلَا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ} (And do not confer favor to acquire more) – Just as the polytheists intended to give Al-Walid a sum of money, considering that small amount as great.
- {وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ} (And for your Lord, be patient) – Be patient upon these acts of obedience, not for immediate gains like wealth or status.
