Al-Qiyamah (The Resurrection): (13) Man will be informed that day...

...of what he has sent forth (of deeds) and what he has held back (or delayed).

This phrase has several interpretations:

  1. What he sent forth and what he delayed: This refers to the deeds he performed and the deeds he failed to perform (omitted).
  2. What he spent and what he left behind: This refers to the wealth he spent in charity and the wealth he left behind (hoarded).
  3. What he advanced and what he deferred: This refers to the good and evil deeds he performed, and the good or bad precedent (Sunnah) he established, which others followed after his death.
  4. Mujahid's interpretation: It is interpreted as the first and last of his deeds.

This is analogous to the verse: "Then He will inform them of what they did. Allah has accounted it, while they have forgotten it" (Al-Mujadilah: 6), and "And We record what they put forth and their tracks" (Ya-Sin: 12).

It is most apparent that this informing (Inbā') will occur on the Day of Resurrection during the presentation and weighing of deeds. It is also possible that it occurs at the time of death, as upon death, his station in Paradise or Hellfire will be made clear to him.
