Verse range: 75:15

Open in Qurani

Al-Qiyamah (The Resurrection): (15) And even if he presents his excuses.

There are sayings among the exegetes regarding this:

The First Opinion: Al-Wahidi said: Al-Ma'ādhīr (المعاذير) is the plural of ma'dharah (معذرة). It is said: ma'dharah, ma'ādhir, and ma'ādhīr.

The author of Al-Kashshāf said: The plural of ma'dharah is ma'ādhir, and al-ma'ādhīr is not the plural of ma'dharah; rather, it is a collective noun for it, similar to al-manākīr (المناكير) for al-munkar (المنكر).

The meaning is that even if a person offers excuses for himself, argues on his own behalf, and brings every excuse and argument, that will not benefit him because he is a witness against himself.

The Second Opinion: Al-Ḍaḥḥāk, Al-Suddī, Al-Farrā', Al-Mubarrid, and Al-Zajjāj said that al-ma'ādhīr means curtains (الستور), and its singular form is mi'dhār (معذار). Al-Mubarrid stated that this is a dialect used in Yemen.

The author of Al-Kashshāf commented: If this narration is authentic, then it is a metaphorical usage, in that the curtain prevents sight, just as the excuse prevents the punishment for the sin.

The meaning, according to this view, is that even if he draws the curtain to hide what he does, his own self is a witness against him.
