Al-Qiyamah (The Resurrection): (20) Nay, but you love...

Issue 1:

The author of Al-Kashshaf states that {Kallā} (Nay/No) is a reprimand to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) concerning the habit of haste, urging patience and deliberation. He emphasizes this by following it with {bal tuḥibbūna al-'ājilah} (but you love the hasty [life]). It is as if he is saying: "O sons of Adam, because you were created from haste and naturally inclined to it, you hasten in everything. Hence, you love the immediate [worldly life] and abandon the Hereafter."

Other exegetes state that {Kallā} means "truly" (Haqqan). That is, truly you love the hasty [life] and abandon the Hereafter. The meaning is that they love the world, work for it, and neglect and turn away from the Hereafter.

Issue 2:

The verbs {tuḥibbūna} (you love) and {tadharaūna} (you abandon) have been recited with both the letter Tā' (as tuḥibbūna) and the letter Yā' (as yaḥibbūna). There are two interpretations for this variation:

1. Al-Farra' said: When the Qur'an is revealed to describe the state of a people, it is sometimes revealed in the form of direct address to them, and sometimes in the form of absence (third person), like His saying: {until you were in the ships and they sailed with them} (Jonah: 22).
2. Abu 'Ali al-Fārisī said: The Yā' (third person) refers back to the mention of mankind in His saying: {Does man think} (Al-Qiyamah: 3), where "man" is intended to mean the multitude/humanity in general, as in His saying: {Indeed, man was created anxious/restless} (Al-Ma'arij: 19). The meaning is that they (mankind) love and abandon. The Tā' (second person) is a direct address to them: "Nay, you love and you abandon."
