Surah Al-Qiyamah (The Resurrection)

(24) And [many] faces, that Day, will be distressed (بَاسِرَةٌ)

**Al-Bāsir:** Means intensely frowning or grimacing. *Al-Bāsil* is even more intense, but it has become commonly used for a brave person whose face becomes stern when fierce. The meaning is that their faces will be frowning, sullen, their colors darkened, stripped of any trace of joy or blessing. This is due to the misery and despair from God's Mercy that has befallen them, and because God has blackened them when He distinguished the people of Paradise and the Fire. The explanation of *busūr* (frowning) has already preceded in the commentary on the verse: **{He frowned and turned away}** (Al-Muddaththir: 22). They will be in this state because they have become certain that the punishment is imminent. This is indicated by the following verse: **{thinking that what will be done to them is a crushing calamity (فَاقِرَةٌ)}**. The word *al-ẓann* (thinking/supposing) here is interpreted by the exegetes to mean certainty. However, I believe *al-ẓann* is mentioned here mockingly, as if to say: When they witness these conditions, the thought/certainty that the Resurrection is real will settle upon them. As for **Al-Fāqirah** (the crushing calamity): * **Abu 'Ubaydah** said: *Al-Fāqirah* is a disaster. It is the name given to the branding iron used to mark the nose. * **Al-Asma'i** said: *Al-Faqr* (the root) means to cut the nose of a camel until the bone is nearly exposed, and then a piece of wood is inserted so the camel can be led by it. Hence, the saying: "The *Fāqirah* was done to him" (meaning a devastating calamity struck him). * **Al-Mubarrid** said: *Al-Fāqirah* is a calamity that breaks the back. Its origin is from *al-faqarah* (vertebra), as if *al-Fāqirah* is a disaster that breaks the vertebrae of the back. * **Ibn Qutaybah** said: It is said, "He was *fāqara-d* (afflicted) like one who was *ra'as-tu* (struck on the head) or *batantuhu* (struck on the belly); thus, he is *mafqūr* (afflicted)." Know that some exegetes interpret *Al-Fāqirah* as the various torments in the Fire. **Al-Kalbī** interpreted it to mean that the *Fāqirah* is being veiled from seeing their Lord and not looking at Him.
