Qatadah, Al-Kalbi, and Muqatil said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took Abu Jahl by the hand and said, **"{Woe to you, then woe!}"** (34). This was a threat to him. Abu Jahl replied, "With what do you threaten me? Neither you nor your Lord can do anything to me, and I am the most honored person in this valley." Then he slipped away, going off. So Allah revealed what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) had said to him.
The meaning of "{Woe to you}" (أولى لك) is "Woe to you" (a curse upon him), meaning that what he dislikes will follow him.
Al-Qadi said: The meaning is: After this, then far be it (from good) for you in your worldly affair, and far be it from good for you in your Hereafter.
Others said: The meaning is: Woe to you, once, and then again.
