Surah Al-Qiyamah (The Resurrection): (38) Then he was a clinging clot...

Verse (38): {Then he was a clinging clot (ʿalaqah)}

This means that the human being was a ʿalaqah (clot/leech-like structure) after being a nutfah (sperm-drop).

Regarding the Almighty's saying: {Then He created, and fashioned (fa-khalaqa fa-sawwā)}

There are two interpretations concerning this:

  1. First View: Fa-khalaqa (He created) means He determined its measure (qaddara), and fa-sawwā (and fashioned) means He made it balanced and just (ʿaddala).
  2. Second View: Fa-khalaqa means He breathed the spirit into it, and fa-sawwā means He perfected its limbs and organs. This is the view of Ibn Abbas and Muqatil.

Verse (40): {Does not that [God] Who does this, have the power to give life to the dead?}
