Surah Al-Insan (76): Verse 11

**{فَوَقَاهُمُ اللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ}** (So Allah protected them from the evil of that Day.)

Tafsir:

Know that when Allah recounted that they performed acts of obedience for two purposes—seeking Allah's pleasure and fearing the Day of Resurrection—He clarified in this verse that He granted them both of those objectives.

  1. Protection from the Terror of the Resurrection: This is meant by His statement: {فَوَقَاهُمُ اللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ} (So Allah protected them from the evil of that Day). He named its hardships "evil" as an extension of meaning, as you have learned. This verse is one piece of evidence indicating that the hardships of the Hereafter only befall the people of punishment.
  1. Granting the Reward for Seeking Allah's Pleasure: Because of this, He granted them radiance in their faces and joy in their hearts.
  • The interpretation of {وَلَقَّاهُمْ} (and He met them/granted them) has already been explained in His saying: {وَيَلَقَّوْنَ فِيهَا تَحِيَّةً} (And they will be greeted therein with a greeting) (Al-Furqan: 75).
    • The interpretation of نَضْرَة (radiance) has been explained in His saying: {وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ} (Some faces, that Day, will be radiant) (Al-Qiyamah: 23).
    • The indefinite form used for {سُرُورًا} (joy) is for magnification and glorification.

Surah Al-Insan (76): Verse 12

**{وَجَزَاهُم بِمَا صَبَرُوا جَنَّةً وَحَرِيرًا * مُّتَّكِئِينَ فِيهَا عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ لَا يَرَوْنَ فِيهَا شَمْسًا وَلَا زَمْهَرِيرًا}** (And He rewarded them for their patience with a Garden and silk garments, reclining therein on couches. They will not see therein any [scorching] sun nor any intense cold.)

Tafsir:

He rewarded them for their patience with:

  1. A Garden (Jannah): A place of reward.
  2. Silk Garments (Harīran): A sign of honor and luxury.

They will be {مُّتَّكِئِينَ فِيهَا عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ} (reclining therein on couches), enjoying comfort.

In this Garden, they will experience perfect moderation, as {لَا يَرَوْنَ فِيهَا شَمْسًا} (They will not see therein any [scorching] sun) (indicating relief from extreme heat) {وَلَا زَمْهَرِيرًا} (nor any intense cold) (indicating relief from extreme cold).
