Surah Al-Insan (The Human Being): Verses 12-13

And He will reward them for their patience with Paradise, a garden, and silk garments.

The meaning is: He will reward them for their patience regarding preferring others (Isaar) and what that preference entails, such as hunger and nakedness.

He will reward them with a Garden containing delightful food, and Silk garments that are splendid attire. This is similar to His saying: {And their garments therein will be silk} (Al-Hajj: 23).

I say: This indicates that what is meant by His saying: {We feed you only for the countenance of Allah} (Al-Insan: 9) is not just feeding, but all types of compassion, including food and clothing.

When the Exalted One mentioned their food and clothing, He then described their dwellings. The considerations regarding the dwellings are of several matters:

First: The place where they sit, which He described by saying: {Reclining therein on couches}.

  • Al-Ara'ik (couches) are the thrones within canopies. A couch is only called arikah when it is assembled (i.e., a set).
  • There are two interpretations regarding the accusative case of {Reclining} (mutakki'een):
    1. Al-Akhfash said it is an accusative of state (haal). The meaning is: He rewarded them with Paradise while they were in a state of reclining, just as you would say, "He rewarded them while standing."
    2. Al-Akhfash also said it could be for praise (madh).

Second: The dwelling itself, which He described by saying: {They will see therein neither [the burning] sun nor intense cold} (zamharier).

  • There are two interpretations for this:
    1. That its atmosphere is moderate in heat and cold.
    2. That az-zamharier (intense cold) is the moon in the dialect of the Tayy tribe, as narrated by Tha'lab, who cited the verse:

    And a night whose darkness was overwhelming, I traversed it while the zamharier (moon) was not shining.

  • The meaning is that Paradise has its own light, so they will not need the sun or the moon.

{And its shade will hang low over them, and its fruits will be made easy to reach, an easy plucking.}
