Surah Al-Insan (The Human Being): Verse 27

Translation:

Indeed, these people love...

Commentary (Tafsir):

The meaning here is that what has driven these disbelievers to disbelief, and caused them to turn away from what benefits them in the Hereafter, is not doubt (shubhah)—so that they might benefit from the proofs mentioned at the beginning of this Surah—but rather desire (shahwah) and the love for these immediate, fleeting pleasures and religious comforts (i.e., worldly ease).

In this verse, there are two questions:

Answer (Several interpretations):

1. Since they did not pay attention to the Hereafter and turned away from it, it is as if they placed it behind their backs.
2. It means: "And they leave behind them the interests of a weighty Day." The word for "interests" (masālih) is omitted (implied).
3. The word warā' (behind) is sometimes used to mean "in front of," as in His saying: $\text{{From behind them is Hell} (Ibrahim: 16)} and \text{{And behind them was a king} (Al-Kahf: 79)}.

Answer:

The attribute of weightiness (thiqal) is metaphorically used for its severity and terror, similar to a heavy object that tires the one carrying it. This is supported by the verse: \text{{Heavy it is in the heavens and the earth} (Al-A'raf: 187)}.

Continuing the Verse:

After Allah Almighty mentioned that the incentive for their disbelief is the love of the immediate (worldly life), He said:

\text{{We created them, and We strengthened their structure. But if We willed, We could substitute their likes with a complete substitution.}}$ (Verse 27)
