Surah Al-Mursalat (Those Sent Forth): Verse 10
وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ نُسِفَتْ
(And when the mountains are blown away/uprooted)
Commentary (Tafsir)
There are two interpretations regarding the meaning of نُسِفَتْ (nussifat - blown away/uprooted):
- Blown Away Like Grain: It means they are blown away like grain that is winnowed with a minsaf (a winnowing tool).
- This is supported by the usage in the Quran: {لَنَحْرِقَنَّهُ ثُمَّ لَنَنسَفَنَّهُ} (We will surely burn it, then scatter it as dust/ashes).
- Similar descriptions include: {وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا} (And the mountains are ground to dust) (Al-Waqi'ah: 5), {وَكَانَتِ الْجِبَالُ كَثِيبًا مَّهِيلًا} (And the mountains become like heaps of sand poured out) (Al-Muzzammil: 14), and {فَيَذَرُهَا قَاعًا صَفْصَفًا} (Then He leaves it a level plain) (Taha: 106, implied context of scattering).
- Uprooted Swiftly: It means they are violently torn out from their places, similar to the meaning of intasafta al-shay' (to snatch something away quickly).
Variant Readings:
It has also been read as:
- طُمِسَتْ (ṭumissat - erased/obliterated).
- فُرِجَتْ (furijat - split open/separated).
- نُسِّفَتْ (nussifat - with a shaddah on the sin, emphasizing the action).
Verse 11
وَاِذَا الرُّسُلُ اُبَّانَ (This appears to be a transcription error in the source text, likely intended to be وَاِذَا الرُّسُلُ اُفِّتَتْ or similar, based on standard Quranic text, but translating the provided text structure):
(And when the Messengers are gathered/appointed/timed)
(Note: The standard Quranic text for this verse is وَإِذَا الرُّسُلُ أُفِّتَتْ (And when the Messengers are appointed a time/date), which is often interpreted as being assembled or set a time for judgment.)
