Surah Al-Mursalat (77): Verse 15

{وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَ}

Woe on that Day to those who deny (the Truth)!

This refers to those who deny Monotheism (Tawhid), Prophethood (Nubuwwah), the Resurrection (Ma'ad), and everything reported by the Prophets, peace be upon them.

Two questions remain here:

First Question: Why is the indefinite noun (*nakirah*) used as the subject (mubtada') in the phrase: **{وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَ}** (Woe on that Day to the deniers)?

Answer: Originally, Wail (Woe) is an accusative verbal noun (masdar mansub) standing in place of its verb. However, it has been shifted to the nominative case (raising/raf') to indicate the permanence and continuity of the doom upon the one being addressed. Similar examples include {سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ} (Peace be upon you). It is permissible for it to be read with the accusative (Waylan), but this reading is not attested.

Second Question: Where is the response (jawab) to the conditional clause: **{فَإِذَا النُّجُومُ طُمِسَتْ}** (And when the stars are extinguished)?

Answer: This is addressed in two ways:

  1. Interpretation 1 (Weak): The implied meaning is: "What you are promised is certainly going to happen when the stars are extinguished." This is considered weak because it places the condition within the context of the promise itself.
  2. Interpretation 2 (Stronger): The response is omitted (mahthuf). The implied structure is: "When the stars are extinguished, and when [other signs occur], then the recompense for deeds will take place, and the Resurrection will commence."

Verses 16–19

{أَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ الْأَوَّلِينَ * ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ الْآخِرِينَ * كَذَلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِينَ * وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَ}

16. Have We not destroyed the former generations? 17. Then We cause the later ones to follow them. 18. Thus do We deal with the criminals. 19. Woe on that Day to those who deny (the Truth)!
