Section 7: Threatening the Disbelievers

This is the seventh type of threatening the disbelievers, which falls under the category of chastisement through reproach and humiliation.

Verse: {This is the Day of Decision} (هذا يوم الفصل)

Know that on this Day, two types of judgment will occur:

  1. Judgment between the Servant and the Lord: Regarding matters pertaining to the Lord (rewards due for deeds), there is no need for a formal "decision" (Fasl) in the sense of dispute resolution, as the reward or punishment is inherent to the deed. However, the judgment is necessary concerning the servant's side—to establish and confirm the deeds they performed so that they confess to them.
  2. Judgment between Servants: This involves mutual claims, such as one claiming, "He wronged me," and another claiming, "He killed me." Here, a formal decision (Fasl) is absolutely necessary.

Verse: {We will gather you and the former ones} (جمعناكم والاولين)

This statement clarifies the meaning of {This is the Day of Decision}. Since this Day is for the judgment of all accountable beings, it is necessary to bring forth every single one, especially since judgment cannot be passed in the absence of a party (i.e., judging in absentia is not permissible).

Verse: {So if you have a plan, then plan against Me} (فإن كان لكم كيد فكيدون)

This refers to how they used various tricks, stratagems, and deceit to ward off the truth. It is as if God says: If you can employ those reprehensible acts of cunning, trickery, deception, and obfuscation here, then do so! This is similar to His saying: {Then produce a Surah like it}.

However, they know that their stratagems are cut off and their deceptions are impossible in that reality. Therefore, God's address to them in this state—{So if you have a plan, then plan against Me}—is the ultimate form of humiliation and reproach. This constitutes a form of spiritual torment. For this reason, He immediately follows it with: {Woe on that Day to the deniers}.

Verses: {Indeed, the righteous will be in shades and springs, * And fruits of whatever they desire. * [They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do." * Indeed, thus do We reward the doers of good. * Woe on that Day to the deniers!} (إن المتقين فى ظلال وعيون * وفواكه مما يشتهون * كلوا واشربوا هنيئا بما كنتم تعملون * إنا كذلك نجزى المحسنين * ويل يومئذ للمكذبين)

This section contrasts the fate of the deniers with the reward of the righteous:

  • The righteous will be in cool shades and flowing springs.
  • They will have fruits of whatever they desire.
  • They will be told: "Eat and drink happily because of what you used to do [in the world]."
  • Indeed, this is how We reward those who do good.
  • Woe on that Day to the deniers!
