[Tafsir Point 9: The Ninth Type of Warning to the Disbelievers]
Know that this is the ninth type of warning directed at the disbelievers. It is as if God Almighty is saying to the disbeliever while he is in this world: You have only exposed yourself to these calamities we have described and these trials we have explained because of your love for the world and your desire for its pleasures and delights.
However, these pleasures are meager compared to those great afflictions. The one occupied with acquiring them is like someone taking a single bite of a sweet delicacy that contains a deadly poison.
It is said to the one who intends to eat it and does not refrain despite the advice of the counselors and the reminders of the admonishers: "Eat this, but woe to you because of it afterward, for you are among those who will be destroyed because of it."
Although this is phrased as a command in wording, in meaning, it is a profound prohibition, a great deterrence, and an extreme form of restraint.
Then God Almighty said:
! 7 < { وإذا قيل لهم اركعوا لا يركعون * ويل يومئذ للمكذبين } . > 7 ! (And when it is said to them, "Bow down," they do not bow. Woe on that Day to the deniers!)
