Tafsir of An-Naba' 78:10

Al-Qaffal said: The origin of *libās* (garment/covering) is that which a person wears and covers himself with, thus concealing him. Since the night covers people with its darkness, concealing them, it has been metaphorically called a garment for them. The meaning intended is that the night acts as a screen for them.

The aspect of blessing in this is that the darkness of the night conceals a person from eyes when he wishes to escape an enemy, or launch a surprise attack, or hide wealth that he does not wish others to see. Al-Mutanabbi said:

*And how many favors does the darkness of the night have for me,* *That testify that the Manichaeans lie (about the nature of darkness).*

Furthermore, just as clothing enhances a person's beauty, completes his strength, and wards off the harm of heat and cold, so too does the "garment" of the night—through the sleep it brings—enhance a person's beauty, soften his limbs, complete his sensory and motor faculties, and ward off the harm of physical fatigue and the distress of unsettling thoughts. Indeed, when a sick person sleeps at night, he finds great relief.

And the sixth [blessing mentioned]: His saying, the Exalted: **"And We have made the daytime for livelihood (Ma'āsh)."**
