Tafsir
Verse range: 78:12
{وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا}
Translation and Exegesis (Tafsir):
Meaning, seven strong (or firm) heavens, plural of *shadīdah* (strong/firm). This means they are well-constructed, powerfully created, unaffected by the passage of time, having no cracks (*futūr*) or openings (*furūj*). This is similar to the verse: **{وَجَعَلْنَا السَّمَاءَ سَقْفًا مَّحْفُوظًا}** (The Prophets: 32) [We made the heaven a protected ceiling].
Addressing the Terminology of "Building" (Banā):
If one asks: The term *banā’* (building) is typically used for the lower parts of a structure, while the ceiling (*saqf*) is the upper part. How then is it said: **{وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا}** (And We built above you seven)? We reply: Building (*al-banā’*) implies a greater distance from affliction and disintegration than a mere ceiling (*al-saqf*). Therefore, mentioning the word **{وَبَنَيْنَا}** is a subtle indication that although the heaven is a ceiling, in its permanence and resistance to collapse, it is like a solid structure (a building). The purpose of choosing this specific word is to convey this subtle point.
{وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا * وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرَاتِ مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا * لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا * وَجَنَّاتٍ أَلْفَافًا * إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا * يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا * وَفُتِحَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَابًا * وَسُيّـِرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا * إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا * لِّلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا * لَّابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا * لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا * إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا * جَزَاءً وِفَاقًا}

**13.** And We made a shining lamp [the sun]. **14.** And We sent down from the rain-laden clouds abundant water, **15.** That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation, **16.** And gardens of dense foliage. **17.** Indeed, the Day of Decision is an appointed time, **18.** The Day the Trumpet will be blown, and you will come forth in multitudes. **19.** And the heaven will be opened, and it will become as gates, **20.** And the mountains will be set in motion and become as a mirage. **21.** Indeed, Hell is an ambush, **22.** A destination for the transgressors, **23.** In which they will remain for ages. **24.** They will taste therein neither coolness nor any drink, **25.** Except scalding water and purulent discharge, **26.** An appropriate recompense.
