| 'Abasa: (11) Nay! Indeed, it is a Reminder.

Then He said: **{Nay!}** (*Kallā*). This is a reprimand concerning what the Prophet (PBUH) was reproached for, and a prohibition against repeating such an action. Al-Hasan said: When Gabriel recited these verses to the Prophet (PBUH), his face changed as if ashes had settled upon it, awaiting God's judgment upon him. When He said: **{Nay!}**, relief came over him, meaning: Do not do such a thing again. We have already explained that this incident is interpreted as abandoning the preferable course of action (*tark al-awlā*).
Then He said: **{Indeed, it is a Reminder}** (*Innahā tadhkirah*). There are two questions regarding this:
**The First Question:** Why is the pronoun feminine (**{it is}** - *innahā*) used, while the subsequent pronoun is masculine (**{whoever wills, will remember it}** - *faman shā’a dhakarahu* in verse 12), when both refer to the same thing?

The Answer: There are two views:

  1. The feminine pronoun {it is} (innahā) refers to:
    • The verses of the Qur'an (according to Muqātil).
    • This very Sūrah (according to Al-Kalbī and Al-Akhfash).
    • The masculine pronoun in {whoever wills, will remember it} (faman shā’a dhakarahu) also refers back to the Tadhkirah (Reminder), because tadhkirah (reminder/admonition) is synonymous with dhikr (remembrance/admonition).
  1. The author of Al-Nathm said: {Indeed, it is a Reminder} refers to the Qur'an. Although the Qur'an is masculine, since it is described here as a Tadhkirah (feminine noun), the feminine pronoun is used. It would have been permissible to use the masculine pronoun, as seen elsewhere: {Nay! Indeed, it is a Reminder} (Al-Muddaththir: 54). The proof that {Indeed, it is a Reminder} refers to the Qur'an is the subsequent phrase: {whoever wills, will remember it}.
**The Second Question:** What is the connection between this verse and the preceding verses?
**The Answer:** There are two ways to connect them: 1. It is as if it is being said: This admonition, which We have revealed to you and clarified regarding honoring the poor and not turning toward the people of this world, is firmly established in the Preserved Tablet (*Al-Lawh Al-Maḥfūẓ*), which the greatest angels are entrusted to guard. 2. It is as if it is being said: This Qur'an has reached such a magnificent status; what need does it have for these disbelievers to accept it? Therefore, whether they accept it or not, do not pay attention to them or trouble your heart over them, and beware of turning away from those who believe in order to please the masters of this world.
