Surah 'Abasa: Verses (12-14)

{فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ} (So whoever wills, will remember it.)

This means that this admonition (the Qur'an) is a clear, manifest reminder. If they wished to understand it, take heed of it, and act according to its requirements, they would be capable of doing so.

The second part is: {فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ} (In esteemed scrolls,)

This means that this admonition is recorded in these esteemed scrolls. The purpose of this is to glorify the status of the Qur'an and elevate its mention. The meaning is that this reminder is inscribed in scrolls.

There are two interpretations regarding what is meant by "scrolls" (ṣuḥuf):

  1. They are scrolls copied from the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ), honored by God Almighty, raised high in the seventh heaven, or elevated in status, purified from the hands of the devils.
  2. Or, they are purified because none touch them except those who are purified (i.e., the angels).

{بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ * كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ} (In the hands of scribes, honorable and righteous.)

Then, the Almighty said: {بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ * كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ} (In the hands of scribes, honorable and righteous.)
