Surah 'Abasa (He Frowned): Verse 6

Verse 6:

**فَأَنْتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّى** (Then to him you turn your attention.)

Tafsir:

Al-Zajjaj said: This means you approach him, expose yourself to him, and incline toward him. It is said, taṣaddā fulān li-fulān (so-and-so turned toward so-and-so) when one exposes oneself to another. The root of this word is taṣaddada (he faced), derived from al-ṣadad, which is what faces you and is directly opposite you. We have previously mentioned a similar usage in the verse: {Except for their whistling and clapping} (Al-Anfal: 35).

There is a variant reading: tashaddad (with a doubled ṣād), which involves the assimilation (idghām) of the tā’ into the ṣād. Abu Ja'far read it as tuṣaddā (with a ḍammah on the tā’), meaning "you are approached/addressed."

The meaning here is that you are invited (called) to eagerly attend to him, driven by your intense desire for his acceptance of Islam.

Verse 7:

**وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّى** (And what is upon you if he will not purify himself?)

Tafsir:

Then the Almighty said: {And what is upon you if he will not purify himself?}
