Verse range: 84:12

Open in Qurani

Al-Inshiqaq (The Sundering): (12) And he will enter the blazing Fire.

There are two issues concerning this verse:

Issue 1: The Meaning of "Entering the Fire" (Sali)

It is said that the disbeliever "enters" (or "is exposed to") the Fire. Allah Almighty says:

"And he will certainly be exposed to the blazing Fire." (An-Nisa: 10) "And We will admit him into Hell." (Al 'Imran: 115) "Except one who is a burner of the blazing Fire." (As-Saffat: 1) "None shall enter it except the most wretched, Who denied and turned away." (Al-Layl: 15-16)

The meaning is that when he receives his book in his left hand from behind his back, he will call for destruction (Thabur), and then he will enter the Fire. While in the Fire, he will also be calling for destruction, as Allah says:

"They will call out there for destruction." (Al-Furqan: 13)

One instance does not negate the other; rather, it indicates the calling for destruction occurs both before entering the Fire and after entering it. May Allah protect us from it and from anything that leads to it, whether in word or deed.

Issue 2: The Recitation of "Yassala" (يصلى)

  1. 'Asim, Hamzah, and Abu 'Amr recited يَصْلَى (Yassala) with a dammah on the Yā' and a light shaddah (unmarked 'sīn'), similar to the recitation of: {Khazanata Jahannam} (the keepers of Hell). This recitation aligns with the common understanding, meaning "he enters the Fire" (Yassali).
  1. Ibn 'Amir, Nafi', and Al-Kisā'ī recited يُصَلَّى (Yuṣallā) with a dammah on the Yā' and a heavy shaddah (doubled 'sīn'), similar to:

"And We will make him taste the blazing Fire." (Al-Haqqah: 31)
