Surah Al-Inshiqaq (The Sundering): (14) Indeed, he thought that...

Translation and Exegesis (Based on Mafatih al-Ghayb):

Know that al-Hawr (الحور) means returning, and al-Mahar (المحار) is the place of return or destination.

It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I did not know the meaning of yahur (يحور) until I heard a Bedouin woman say to her daughter: Huri (حوري), meaning: 'Return!'"

Al-Qaffal narrated from some scholars that al-Hawr means returning to a state contrary to what one was previously in, just as they say: "We seek refuge in Allah from al-Hawr after al-Kawr (i.e., from regression after being established/gathered)."

Based on the first meaning (return/resurrection): The meaning of the verse is that he thought he would not return to the Hereafter, meaning he thought he would not be resurrected. Muqatil and Ibn Abbas said: He thought he would not return to Allah Almighty.

Based on the second meaning (returning to a contrary state): He thought he would not return to a state contrary to what he was in during the worldly life of pleasure and enjoyment.

{ 15 } Balah! Indeed, his Lord was ever, of him, Seeing.
