Al-A'la (The Most High): (16) Nay, but you prefer the worldly life...
- *The reading of the general populace (with the letter tā’):* "Nay, but you prefer..." This is supported by the recitation of Ubayy [ibn Ka'b]. This means: Rather, you prefer the deeds of this world over the deeds of the Hereafter. Ibn Mas'ud said: "Indeed, the world has been presented to us, and its food, drink, women, pleasures, and delights have been hastened for us. But the Hereafter is hidden from us and has been withheld from us, so we take what is immediate and leave what is deferred."
- *The reading of Abu 'Amr (with the letter yā’):* "Nay, but they prefer..." This refers to the wretched one (Al-Ashqa).
