Al-Ghashiyah (88): Verse 13
{فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ}
(In it are elevated couches/thrones.)
The Almighty's saying: {فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ} (In it are elevated couches).
This means they are high up in the air.
- This elevation is so that the believer, when seated upon them, can see all the blessings and dominion granted to him by his Lord in Paradise.
- Kharajah ibn Mus'ab reported that it reached us that some of these couches are stacked one above the other, rising as high as Allah wills. When the friend of Allah (Wali Allah) comes to sit on one, it lowers itself for him. Once he is settled, it rises again to the height Allah wills.
- The first interpretation (that they are simply high up) is preferable, although the second interpretation (that they adjust their height) is not impossible, as it would bring greater delight to the accountable person.
- Ibn Abbas said: They are couches whose planks are made of gold, studded with emeralds, pearls, and rubies, raised high in the sky.
{وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ}
(And cups set down.)
